I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, went to college in Indiana and graduate school in Kansas, and lived in Texas and Virginia before settling in Pacific Grove twenty-two years ago. I’ve enjoyed a wide-ranging career in teaching, research, association management, and architecture; I currently work for an architectural firm in Monterey.
I got involved in P.G. community life and local politics soon after moving here in 1990 with my wife, Jan Roehl, and our two-year-old daughter, Callie. In 1993, I was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission and then ran successfully for City Council in 1994 and was re-elected four years later. My current service dates from 2009, when I was appointed to fill a vacancy. I was re-elected the next year for the balance of the term.
During the eleven years I've been on the Council, I've had the opportunity to work on many projects ranging from pedestrian safety to historic preservation and economic revitalization. I was involved in the Civic Center project, the Youth Center, and the senior apartments at Lover’s Point, updating the Historic Preservation Ordinance, development of the Forest Hill Specific Plan, and adoption of the Coastal Parks Plan. I chaired ad hoc committees on traffic calming and pedestrian safety and helped initiate the Drive Friendly campaign
I’ve been the City’s representative to the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) for more than ten years and have worked with that agency to get sidewalk and trail improvements funded and with Caltrans on the traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at Forest and Sunset.
